Sports and Fitness Center Expansion and Renovation, Tufts University
Construction was recently completed for the Phase I renovations to the Cousens Gymnasium at Tufts University. This original, historic 1938 building's basketball gymnasium was rotated 90 degrees to accommodate a 94' long (NCAA standard) basketball game court and double volleyball and basketball practice courts with a complete new maple floor. The project required the demolition of the original cast in place concrete bleachers and replacement with new retractable units allowing a larger practice surface.
The Cousens lobby and entry plaza were restored and made accessible with a new exterior ramp system designed to be integral with the historic and monumental entry steps. Phase 2 plans have been developed for comprehensive renovations and additions to the adjacent Ames Center Athletics Complex anticipating fundraising for a new fitness, strength and conditioning center, multi-purpose activity rooms, squash center, sports medicine suite, equipment management and laundry, varsity locker rooms, administrative and coaches offices, a new 50-meter natatorium with associated support facilities including 1000 spectator seats.
