Soffer Athletic Center, Berkshire School
The existing athletic building at Berkshire School housed a gymnasium, dance studio, locker rooms and four squash courts. The original project scope was to add four squash courts and to renovate existing locker rooms. During the conceptual design phase, after the owner and design team explored numerous layout possibilities, the project scope was expanded to completely renovate the 51,200-square-foot building so that all spaces had a new and updated appearance. Through analysis of various plans configurations, the squash center addition became a ten-court, 11,000-square-foot addition with all courts grouped around a central viewing area. The addition was rotated at an angle to create the passage thru the building and to also face the large glass façade at the end of the viewing area out towards the mountains. The gymnasium renovation utilized extra space beyond the two basketball courts to provide the school with a training and fitness area, a climbing wall, strength and conditioning space and inset turf. The revitalized athletic center opened in October of 2016.
