Athletic Master Plan and Field House, St. Lawrence University
Canton, New York
The Athletic Master Plan developed for this 100-acre athletic campus at St. Lawrence University draws its organizing forces from the entrances of Newell Field House and Leckonby Stadium, which face each other across Creasy Way, the landscaped esplanade that unifies the new athletic quadrangle with the academic campus.
Inside the field house entrance pavilion is a colonnaded lobby with a 100-foot-long skylight that leads to all upper-level venues. To the right are windows to the track and tennis courts located a full floor below, as well as doors to the fitness center and 350-seat field house gallery. To the left are stairs to the lower level, a locker room and a viewing balcony for the three-story climbing wall. Straight ahead are the multipurpose room, public rest rooms and faculty/staff locker rooms.
The field house, fronted by a 10,000-square-foot dividable multipurpose room for aerobics and yoga, staff locker rooms and an upper-level café. The lower level houses an eight-lane, 200-meter track, five tennis courts, four recreational basketball courts, and a 3,500-square-foot training center.
Daylighting was the overriding interior design objective, and both interior and exterior walls separating venues and corridors are glazed. Roofs and clerestories are punctured with insulated translucent skylights. Durable decorative block and tile on walls and floors are light in color for maximum reflectivity. White suspended ceilings help control acoustics, as do carpeted inserts on tile floors.
While a glass wall offers sight lines between the field house and fitness center, exterior windows offer fitness center users a view to the outdoor track and all-weather football field of Leckonby Stadium. At night, the illuminated fitness center is a beacon to the main campus at the end of Creasy Way.
